Why use a lawn leveller?
A lawn leveller is the simple way to spread and level soil under new turf for a smooth result. It also works over existing turf, to level out the bumps and mounds that make a lawn hard to mow.
It handles the tougher spreading jobs too. The ground plate and the handle are both stainless steel, so it can spread topsoil, break up heavy soil and push mounds of material around without bending.
With little effort it spreads top dressing evenly on any size of lawn, and levels soil for planting. It also spreads gravel, pebbles and sand on paths, driveways and foundations.
The lute goes together for use, and comes apart for storage, in a couple of minutes.
Easy to use
Whether you are levelling a lawn at home for the first time or keeping a golf green or sports ground in shape, the lute is simple to use. The tool takes the strain, rather than your back.
How to level a lawn
Mow first. Cut the grass a little shorter than usual so the dressing can settle in.
Drop the dressing in small piles. Put a little more on the low spots.
Push and pull the lute over it. Work in long strokes, then go across the lawn again at a right angle.
Check the depth. You should still see the tips of the grass. Keep each layer to about 10 mm.
Water it in. A light watering settles the dressing around the grass.
Deep hollows take more than one round. Fill them part of the way, let the grass grow through, and top up a couple of weeks later.

Handle height
The 77 cm lute stands about 142 cm tall assembled and the 92 cm lute about 173 cm. The longer handle on the wider plate lets you stand up straight on a big job.
When to top dress in Australia
Top dress while the grass is growing strongly so it comes back through the dressing quickly. For couch, kikuyu, buffalo and zoysia that is usually late spring to early autumn.
